Breeding and development of intermediate wheatgrass as a perennial grain crop for western Canada

Researchers: Douglas J. Cattani
Keywords: Breeding
Start Date: 2019
Status: In Progress

Lead Researcher: Douglas J. Cattani, University of Manitoba
Start Date: 2019
Project Length: 3 Years
Project Status: APPROVED IN PROGRESS

Objectives:
1. An understanding of FHB genetic expression in intermediate wheatgrass, a perennial relative of wheat.
2. A greater understanding of selection for seed size on yield of intermediate wheatgrass.
3. Examining the efficacy of producer production methods and to gain a better understanding nitrogen fertility as it relates to reproductive growth in intermediate wheatgrass.

Total project cost: $180,000
MWBGA Funding Requested: $45,000.00
Funding Partners: CAP AG Action MB, WGRF, MFSA, DeRucyk Seed

Benefits to MB Producers: Long term variety development. Potential identification of fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance in intermediate wheatgrass (IWG) germplasm developed at the U of M. Potential for the identification of FHB gene(s) for utilization in wheat breeding.
