Harvest 2019: Working Together on Wheat Class Management
With the 2019 wheat harvest well under way, the Canadian Grain Commission would like to remind everyone in Canada’s grain industry from grain producers to exporters about the important role we all play in ensuring the integrity of Canada’s wheat classes. Wheat classes are a key part of our grain quality system. Managing wheat classes properly from farm to export continues to ensure Canadian wheat’s high level of quality and dependability.
What can you do?
- Before delivery, refer to the variety designation lists at www.grainscanada.gc.ca to
confirm which class your wheat is eligible for.
- Complete your Declaration of Eligibility form before delivery and double-check that it’s
accurate before you submit it.
- Take all necessary preventative measures from farm to export to mitigate the risk of
accidental admixtures of wheat classes during storage, handling and transportation.
In January 2015, the Canadian Grain Commission began implementing a plan to
modernize Canada’s wheat classes, which included the evaluation of the quality of
individual varieties within certain wheat classes and reassignment of varieties that do
not meet quality parameters for that class.
